How do period discs self-empty?

Menstrual discs are designed to sit in the vaginal fornix, just behind the cervix, where they collect menstrual flow instead of absorbing it like pads or tampons. However, period discs do NOT self-empty.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Collection, Not Absorption: A menstrual disc collects your period flow in a flexible reservoir but doesn’t absorb it.

  • Manual Removal Required: To empty the collected fluid, you must manually remove the disc by gently pulling on the rim or tab.

  • No Automatic Emptying: Unlike some internal menstrual products that rely on absorption, the disc holds the fluid until you remove it.

  • Maximum Wear Time: You can wear a disc up to 8–12 hours depending on your flow, but it needs to be emptied and cleaned before reinsertion.

  • Emptying Process: When you remove the disc, empty the contents into the toilet or sink, rinse the disc with water, and reinsert if needed.

Summary: Period discs do not empty themselves. You must remove and empty them regularly to maintain hygiene and prevent leaks.
