How many days after my period can l get pregnant?
You can get pregnant at any point in your cycle, but the chances are much higher on certain days.
Here’s how it works:
-
The average menstrual cycle is about 28 days, but it can range from 21–35 days.
-
Ovulation (when the ovary releases an egg) usually happens about 12–14 days before your next period.
-
You’re most fertile in the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself (this is called the fertile window).
-
Since sperm can live inside the female body for up to 5 days, having sex in the days after your period can still lead to pregnancy if you ovulate early.
Example (28-day cycle):
-
Period: Day 1–5
-
Fertile window: Around Day 9–14
-
Highest chance of pregnancy: Day 12–14 (ovulation)
👉 If your cycle is shorter, you could ovulate sooner, meaning you could get pregnant just a few days after your period ends.
⚠️ Because cycles vary from woman to woman, it’s not safe to rely on “days after period” alone as birth control.
