How to Remove Odor from a Reusable Menstrual Disc

Reusable menstrual discs (usually made of medical-grade silicone) are generally odor-resistant, but improper cleaning or prolonged wear can sometimes lead to a bad smell. Here’s how to freshen it up safely and effectively.

🔍 Why Does My Menstrual Disc Smell?

Odor can build up due to:

  • Blood residue trapped in small crevices

  • Not washing or drying thoroughly

  • Storing the disc when damp

  • Using harsh or incompatible soaps

  • Bacterial growth from long wear time

🧼 Step-by-Step: How to Remove the Smell

1️⃣ Rinse Immediately After Use

  • Rinse with cold or lukewarm water to remove most of the blood.

  • Avoid hot water at first — it can "set" protein stains and odors.

2️⃣ Use a Gentle, Fragrance-Free Soap

  • Wash with a pH-balanced, unscented cleanser made for silicone products or intimate care.

  • Avoid soaps with oil, fragrance, or strong antibacterials (they can damage silicone or leave residue).

Recommended soap: Nyx Collection’s cup cleanser (or similar gentle silicone-safe options).

3️⃣ Soak in White Vinegar Solution (Once in a While)

  • Mix 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts water

  • Soak your disc for 30 minutes

  • Rinse thoroughly with water

🛑 Do NOT soak in vinegar regularly — occasional use only.

4️⃣ Boil the Disc Safely

  • Place your disc in boiling water for 5–10 minutes

  • Use a dedicated pot or a silicone cup sterilizer

  • Keep the disc from touching the sides or bottom to avoid melting

💡 This is especially effective for odor or discoloration.

5️⃣ Use Baking Soda for Persistent Odors

  • Make a paste with baking soda + water

  • Gently rub the disc with the paste using your fingers

  • Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse and boil

6️⃣ Let It Dry Completely Before Storing

  • Air dry the disc in a clean, dry space

  • Store in a breathable cotton bag, not an airtight container

🚫 What to Avoid

  • ❌ Hydrogen peroxide (can degrade silicone over time)

  • ❌ Bleach (too harsh and unsafe)

  • ❌ Scented soaps (can leave residue and worsen odor)

  • ❌ Alcohol or rubbing alcohol
